What is a Context-Aware Public Transport Solution?
Transport for NSW is inviting innovators to trial context aware solutions that use data, design, and analytics to provide public transport passengers with personalised, real-time information, during unexpected disruptions. Successful ideas receive up to $50,000 in funding and the opportunity to collaborate with experts and test their ideas in a real-world setting.
So, what exactly is a context aware public transport solution? It's all about tailoring the travel information you receive based on your current situation and personal preferences.
One of the biggest challenges in public transport is dealing with unplanned disruptions – like train delays, major events causing traffic jams, or accessibility issues at stations. A context aware solution would be able to automatically notify passengers about these disruptions and suggest alternative travel options.
For example, if your usual train is delayed, the system could inform you and recommend taking a nearby bus or ferry instead. It might even factor in your personal preferences, like avoiding crowded spaces. Or if bad weather hits and you were planning to cycle, the system could suggest switching to public transport and highlight the closest bus or train services.
The power of these context aware solutions lies in their ability to quickly adapt to changing conditions and provide passengers with useful, actionable information to help them get to their destination. But it's not just about disruptions – these solutions can also personalise the travel options they present to each individual. Maybe you prioritise eco-friendly travel, or you need accessible routes because of mobility challenges. A context aware system can take these preferences into account and suggest tailored journey options that meet your needs.
For instance, a commuter with a pram could receive updates about accessible platforms and elevators to make their trip easier. Someone focused on reducing their carbon footprint could get recommendations for low-emission routes or active travel like walking and cycling.
To make this happen, these context aware solutions need to leverage real-time data and advanced predictive tools. By using live information about transport networks, weather, and passenger volumes, they can provide up-to-date travel info. And by using AI to anticipate disruptions before they occur, they can give passengers a heads-up to adjust their plans.
Importantly, these solutions also need to be inclusive and accessible for all. Not everyone uses the latest transport apps, so the information needs to be available through other channels like digital displays, voice assistants, and even NFC tags that passengers can tap.
The Context Aware Travel Innovation Challenge is looking for innovators to develop these transformative solutions. Successful applicants can receive funding of up to $50,000, as well as the chance to collaborate with transport experts and trial their ideas in a real-world setting.
