Context aware travel
innovation challenge
How can we deliver travel information to the right person, in the right place, at the right time?
About this innovation challenge
Transport for NSW (TfNSW) is inviting innovators to trial context aware solutions that transform how passengers access and use transport information during unplanned disruptions.
The context aware travel innovation challenge seeks Proof-of-Concepts (PoC) and Proof-of-Value prototypes to trial technologies that use real-time data, smart analytics, and user-focused design to provide passengers with personalised, adaptive, and relevant information throughout their journey.
Seed funding up to $50,000 is available for successful applicants to complete a trial.
To apply for the innovation challenge, you must submit a completed application form via email to data@transport.nsw.gov.au by 11:59pm on Wednesday, 19 February 2025.
A virtual information session will be held on Wednesday, 5 February 2025 to give more details about the challenge and answer questions. A recording of the session will be available after the event.

Innovation Challenge Statement
How can context aware solutions assist customers in making travel choices during disrupted journeys?
Our Challenge
Unplanned disruptions create uncertainty and inconvenience for customers. A significant challenge is that customers have no clear gauge of the severity or duration of these disruptions, leaving them uncertain about how much their journey will be interrupted. Existing information channels often lack the contextual depth to convey the impact of disruptions on individual travel plans. Customers receive alerts when an incident is classified as a disruption but remain uninformed while its assessed. The absence of this classification and explanation of unexpected disruptions leads to frustration, anxiety, overcrowding and a diminished trust in public transport as a safe, reliable, and accessible mode of travel.
What is context aware travel?
Context aware travel is a customer experience where we interact with customers through digital interfaces, delivering the right suggestions at the right time and place to meet their needs.
