Introduction
Ensuring our customers have access to the latest information to plan their journeys is one of Transports key priorities. By partnering with various travel apps, Transport has been able to provide customers with access the latest information on Buses, Trains, Light Rail, Metro, and Ferries, servicing over 3 million monthly customers. Through travel apps, customers can see stop locations, timetables, find out how each trip is tracking against schedule, and the real-time GPS position of vehicles.
How we are making Data accessible
Transport has partnered with multiple start up developers as well as bigger organisations to support trip planning tools such as Google Maps and TripView to ensure our customers have the latest information to plan their journey.
Data across all modes of transport in NSW has been aggregated and made publicly available from the Transport Open Data Hub. From the hub, Developers can access public transport real-time and static datasets to use in trip planning products. Feeds are available across all public transport modes: Buses, Trains, Light Rail, Metro, and Ferries.
Developers can access real-time data feeds via the Open Data Application Programming Interface (API) Gateway, which regularly services over 100 million API hits a week. Transport for NSW uses the widely adopted General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS), as well as Trip Planner APIs to allow developers flexibility when developing their products. GTFS Feeds are available as separate APIs for each Transport mode and operator, depending on the technology used. Our documentation page and reference tables include comprehensive information on how these all fit together to give a complete view of the Transport for NSW network.
Transport has dedicated support teams to monitor feed activity and accuracy, and we work closely with our developer partners to address technical feedback and data issues.
